カワイイホクサイ プロジェクトとは？
墨田区観光協会、みんな北斎プロジェクトと一般社団法人GLOBAL KAWAII協会が協力し、障がいのあるアーティストと江戸時代の巨匠・葛飾北斎の作品を融合させた「カワイイホクサイ」プロジェクトを立ち上げました。「カワイイホクサイ」プロジェクトは、江戸時代にすみだの地で活躍した葛飾北斎の作品と、現代の障がいのあるアーティストたちの創造力を融合させる取り組みです。
KAWAII HOKUSAI PROJECT is a collaboration among the Sumida Tourist Association, “We Are All HOKUSAI Project,” a welfare initiative for people with disabilities through art, and the Global Kawaii Association. We aim to create kawaii, colorful, and playful designs combining the works of the legendary artist, Katsushika Hokusai, who was born and lived in the Sumida area in the 18th to 19th century, with the art of people with disabilities.
北斎は、日常の中に美しさや色彩、躍動感を見出し、幻想的な世界や風景を描き出しました。このプロジェクトでは、その北斎のビジョンを受け継ぎ、現代の「カワイイ」文化と組み合わせることで、新たなデザインを創出しています。このプロジェクトを通じて、アートと福祉、そして「カワイイ」文化の融合が、より多くの人々に広がり、社会全体にポジティブな影響を与えることを目指しています。
Hokusai found beauty and dynamism in every small thing in our daily lives. Through his brushstrokes and imagination, he created fantastical worlds and landscapes.

北斎の代表作ともいえる「神奈川沖浪裏」をベースに、鮮やかな色彩とポップな海の生き物を加えたデザインです。よく見ると、波乗りをする墨田区の猫が！！
This design is based on Hokusai’s iconic work The Great Wave off Kanagawa, enhanced with vibrant colors and playful sea creatures. If you look closely, you’ll spot a cat from Sumida Ward surfing the waves!
その他にも、「凱風快晴」として知られる赤富士の絵に、現代的なストリートカワイイの要素を融合したデザインや、溢れんばかりの荒々しい水面を描いた怒涛図の中に遠くを見つめる猫が2匹紛れ込むユニークなデザインで、北斎の世界への旅を表現した二作品もあります。
There are also two other designs that express journeys into Hokusai’s world: one is a modern take on the iconic Red Fuji (also known as South Wind, Clear Sky), fused with elements of contemporary street-kawaii style; the other is a unique piece in which two cats gaze into the distance, hidden among the wild, overflowing waves of The Great Torrent.

What is “We Are All HOKUSAI Project”?
すみだ北斎美術館の開館を記念し、2016年12月に全国障害者アート公募展「みんな北斎」を墨田区が開催しました。その後、区内数カ所でアートワークショップを開き、障がいのある人とない人がふれあう機会を創出したり、アニメーション制作の取り組みを展開。2021年には、この取り組みを一般社団法人墨田区観光協会とすみだクリエイターズクラブが引き継ぎました。「アートの前では、みんな自由、みんな同じ」というコンセプトのもと、ひとりひとりがのびのびと自由に表現する場をつくり、人と人をつなぐことを目指しています。

To commemorate the opening of the Sumida Hokusai Museum, Sumida Ward held a nationwide art exhibition titled “We Are All HOKUSAI” (“Minna Hokusai” in Japanese) in December 2016. Since then, art workshops have been held in several locations in the ward, creating opportunities for people with and without disabilities to interact with each other, and with animation production under development. In 2021, this initiative was taken over by the Sumida Ward Tourism Association and Sumida Creators Club. Based on the concept that “everyone is free and the same in front of art,” the aim is to create a space where all people can express themselves freely and in a relaxed manner and connect people.

Who are the Global Kawaii Association?
日本発の文化である「カワイイ」を通じて、性別、年齢、国籍、障がいの有無など、あらゆる壁をなくすことを目的に、2023年9月に設立されました。私たちは、芸術や文化、そして自分らしさを表現することが、差別のない世界に近づくための重要なツールであると信じています。障がいの有無に関わらず、カワイイが思いやりに満ち、遊び心があり、誰もが自分の居場所を見つけられる世界を創造する手段となることを願っています。
Founded in September 2024, we aim to eliminate through our KAWAII philosophy barriers to inclusion, including gender, age, nationality, and disability. We believe that the art, culture, and expression of every individual are important tools to create a world free of discrimination. We hope that kawaii can help make the world a compassionate and playful place, where everyone can find their own space and sense of belonging, regardless of whether they have a disability or not. This is our hope!
